At 'yan po ang mga balitang dapat ninyong malaman. Sumasalamin sa katotohanan sa ating bayan. Ito ang State of the Nation.

—Closing spiel from 2011-2023.

State of the Nation is a primetime/late-night newscast broadcast by GTV. It is currently anchored by Atom Araullo. The newscast premiered on February 28, 2011 upon the launch of GMA News TV, with Jessica Soho as its anchor.

History[]

2011-2021: Jessica Soho[]

The program is described as a more comprehensive newscast than 24 Oras, which is the flagship news program of its sister channel GMA Network. State of the Nation with Jessica Soho aired on weeknights at 21:00-22:15 (PHT). It features several guests to analyze the country's issues deeply in segments, as well as featuring exclusive reports and the insights and rundown of the day's top news stories.

On its 5th anniversary, State of the Nation unveils their new intro led to their new title card, and a flat graphic package for the first time. This is the third GMA News TV newscast updated their on-air graphics and OBB, after Balitanghali and News TV Live.

On December 18, 2018, the newscast transferred to Studio 2 as its main studio, Studio 5 (which was mainly used by GMA programs 24 Oras, Saksi and Imbestigador) underwent renovations. Studio 2 is where most of GMA News TV's programs are filmed.

On May 14, 2019, during the 2019 Philippine general election, the newscast returned to the newly-renovated Studio 5 along with 24 Oras and Saksi. The newscast aired with new OBB, logo and graphics, while the ticker was completely removed which it was returned on May 16, 2019. A new theme song was adopted but this was primarily used in the OBB and headlines only. The old theme song, which was first introduced since the first day of the newscast in 2011, is still in use during follow details. On July 28, the OBB was updated again.

In March 2020, the show was temporarily suspended due to the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The show resumed its programming on September 21, 2020.

2021-present: Araullo and Pulido[]

On January 4, 2021, also debuted its new opening billboard, title card, and graphics for the second time. Jessica Soho has permanently left the show as an anchor to focus on Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho. Atom Araullo and Maki Pulido was chosen as her permanent replacements. Also, Soho's name was dropped from the newscast title, thus shortening it to State of the Nation.

On December 18, 2023, State of the Nation, alongside 24 Oras, Saksi, the Unang Balita segment of Unang Hirit and Balitanghali and GMA Integrated News Bulletin, revamped their graphics, logo, and music, as well as the OBB, which features rotating letters/logos akin to the 2013 and 2016 Marvel Studios logos. The change is part of GMA Integrated News's unified corporate identity. On April 1, 2024, the newscast moved to a later timeslot of 11:05 pm. In 2024, Atom Araullo became temporarily inactive due to filling in for Arnold Clavio on Saksi. Clavio was only limited to appearing in only Unang Hirit due to hemorrhagic stroke. In his place is Sandra Aguinaldo anchoring the newscast. He returned at October 14, albeit without Pulido. This was later confirmed on October 25, with Araullo as the sole anchor.[1] It was also reported that Pulido would be permanently laid off from the newscast as a cost-cutting measure. On November 4, 2024, the opening billboard was updated to have Araullo saying the title of the newscast re-recorded without Pulido.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to 2021, this is one of the GMA Integrated News programs to have the anchor's name on the title, the other being GMA's former primetime newscast, Frontpage: Ulat ni Mel Tiangco.
    • The program was originally titled State of the Nation with Jessica Soho since Jessica Soho was the sole presenter.
  • With only one anchor, State of the Nation is tied with Saksi, TV5's Frontline Express and ABS-CBN's TV Patrol Weekend as the only currently airing Philippine television newscasts to have a sole anchor.
    • Atom Araullo being the sole anchor of the newscast since 2024 marks the return of a solo presenter format since its inception in 2011 to 2021 with Soho.
